One of the joys of working as an independent celebrant is getting to see incredible venues across the region. From grand manor houses to intimate gardens, converted barns to waterside locations, there’s something magical about each place I visit.
If you’re searching for the perfect spot for your ceremony, here are some of my favourites across Hertfordshire, London, and the surrounding counties.
What to Consider When Choosing Your Venue
Before we dive into specific venues, let’s talk about what makes a location perfect for your ceremony.
Consider the practical elements: How many guests will you have? Do you need indoor backup for unpredictable weather? Is the venue accessible for all your guests? What facilities do they offer?
Think about the atmosphere: Do you want somewhere grand and formal, or relaxed and intimate? Historic or contemporary? Rural or urban?
Location matters: Is it easy for your guests to reach? Are there accommodation options nearby? Does the travel time work for your timeline?
But most importantly: Does it feel right for you? The venue should resonate with your style and vision for the day.
Historic Manor Houses and Estates
There’s something timeless about celebrating in a historic manor house. These venues offer elegance, beautiful grounds, and often a fascinating backstory.
Manor houses across Hertfordshire and the surrounding counties provide stunning architecture, manicured gardens, and often multiple ceremony spaces – perfect if you want weather backup options.
Many have exclusive use options, meaning your celebration truly feels like it’s yours for the day. The grandeur of these venues works beautifully for traditional, elegant ceremonies, though they’re versatile enough for more relaxed celebrations too.
Why I love them: The combination of indoor elegance and beautiful grounds means you have options whatever the weather brings. The established gardens and mature trees create naturally beautiful settings.
Converted Barns
Converted barns have become incredibly popular, and it’s easy to see why. They offer rustic charm with modern comfort, creating that perfect blend of character and convenience.
Across the counties I serve, there are numerous beautifully converted barn venues. Original features like exposed beams and stonework create warmth and character, while the conversion provides all the facilities modern couples need.
Many barn venues offer outdoor ceremony spaces too – perhaps a courtyard or lawn area – so you can be outside for your ceremony then move into the barn for your reception.
Why I love them: The rustic aesthetic works for so many different styles, from elegant and sophisticated to relaxed and informal. They feel special without being stuffy.
Quirky and Unique Venues
If you want something a bit different, there are some wonderfully quirky venues across the region.
Think historic pubs with character, converted industrial spaces, galleries, museums, gardens, and private estates with unusual features. These venues offer something unexpected, somewhere your guests will remember.
The beauty of working with an independent celebrant is that we can create your ceremony at any of these unique spaces – no venue license required.
Why I love them: These venues tell a story. Maybe you met at a particular pub, or you both love a specific museum. Choosing somewhere with personal meaning makes your ceremony even more special.
Outdoor and Waterside Locations
For couples who love the outdoors, nothing beats a ceremony with nature as your backdrop.
Across the region, there are beautiful waterside venues – riverside gardens, lake-side lawns, locations with ponds or water features. There’s something incredibly romantic about water reflecting the sky, creating natural beauty that no florist could replicate.
Private gardens also make stunning ceremony locations. Whether it’s your own garden, a family member’s, or a hired garden venue, outdoor ceremonies feel intimate and personal.
Why I love them: The natural light, the fresh air, the connection to nature – outdoor ceremonies have a special quality. Yes, you need a weather backup plan, but when it works, it’s magical.
Top tip: For outdoor ceremonies, timing matters. Consider the sun’s position (you don’t want guests squinting into bright sunlight), and think about shade options if you’re planning a summer afternoon ceremony.
London Venues
London offers incredible variety for ceremony venues. From elegant hotels to contemporary event spaces, quirky urban locations to hidden garden squares, the options are wonderfully diverse.
Historic venues in London provide gravitas and grandeur. Contemporary spaces offer modern style and flexibility. And then there are those unexpected London locations – rooftop terraces, riverside spaces, private clubs, galleries – that offer something completely unique.
Many London venues have celebrant-led ceremonies regularly, so they’re well set up to accommodate independent celebrants and personalised ceremonies.
Why I love them: London’s diversity means there’s truly something for everyone. Want industrial chic? Got it. Historic elegance? Absolutely. Modern sophistication? No problem.
Gardens and Parks
For couples who want outdoor beauty without the logistics of organising everything yourselves, garden and park venues offer the perfect solution.
Formal gardens provide structure and carefully designed beauty. More naturalistic gardens and parks offer a sense of space and freedom. Both create stunning backdrops for ceremonies.
Many have covered options too – pavilions, orangeries, or indoor spaces – giving you that crucial weather backup while still offering outdoor beauty when conditions allow.
Why I love them: Gardens change with the seasons, meaning your ceremony will have different character depending on when you marry – spring blossoms, summer roses, autumn colours, or winter evergreens.
Intimate Spaces
Not every ceremony needs a grand venue. Some of the most meaningful celebrations happen in intimate spaces – private homes, small private dining rooms, cosy historic buildings.
These venues work beautifully for smaller guest lists, creating a sense of closeness and warmth that larger spaces can’t quite replicate.
Why I love them: The intimacy allows for more interaction, more spontaneity, more genuine connection between everyone present.
Choosing What’s Right for You
The perfect venue is the one that feels right for your ceremony. Trust your instincts.
Visit potential venues in person if you can. Photos are beautiful, but they don’t capture the feeling of a space, the way light moves through it, the atmosphere it creates.
Ask questions: What’s included? What are the restrictions? What’s their experience with celebrant-led ceremonies? What backup options exist for weather?
And remember, as your celebrant, I’ll work with any venue you choose. I’ve created ceremonies in grand ballrooms and back gardens, historic estates and quirky pubs. Each one is special because it’s chosen by you.
Let’s Find Your Perfect Setting
Whether you’ve already found your dream venue or you’re still exploring options, I’d love to hear about your plans. As we work together on your ceremony, we’ll make sure every element – including your chosen location – comes together to create something truly memorable.
